Rob Milne inspired many enthusiasts with his particular approach to history when he first appeared on my radio programme "Patricia's People" (SAfm 104-107) back in February 1999. I think that, like me, listeners loved his small brush strokes on the large canvas of our past, his interest in the intimate stories of love, loyalty, pettiness and cruelty that characterised this (and indeed any) human conflict.

Most accounts of this dramatic period concentrate on politics, tactics, firepower and logistics and I believe that many of these tales would have been lost to our archives but for Rob's relentless ferreting in koppie and dorp around South Africa. I congratulate him on the passion with which he has pursued this interest and am delighted that precious stories are now in print.
